What is QR Code?

QR Code means Quick Respose Code which consists of black squares arranged in a square grid. QR Codes are two-dimensional barcodes invented in 1994 by the Japanese automotive company Denso Wave. QR Code technology was developed to track vehicles during manufacturing. As very little information can be encoded in one-dimensional codes like UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8, EAN-13, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, Codabar, etc., there was the need to develop a barcode, which can contain much more information. Masahiro Hara from the Japanese company Denso Wave came up with the solution of two-dimensional barcode called as QR Code, which can encode much more information than one-dimensional barcodes. The Quick Response codes became popular due to readability with mobile applications and greater storage capacity as compared to one-dimensional barcodes. Due to the popularity of QR Codes, mobile manufacturers are now adding QR Code reading feature in the Camera Applications.

QR Codes are of two types as follows:
  • 1. Static QR Codes: Static QR Codes are scannable multiple times. You can see QR Codes printed in newspapers, these QR Codes are encoded with a webpage and most of these QR Codes are Static QR Codes. You may have scanned a Payment QR Code displayed on a retailer's counter. These types of QR Codes are also Static QR Codes.
  • 2. Dynamic QR Codes: Dynamic QR Codes are scannable only once. These types of QR Codes expire after they are scanned once. QR Code API is used to create this type of QR Codes.

Minimum Size of QR Code

QR Code can be created as small as 25 pixels, but we must ensure that QR code is readable. Small QR Code take more time to read and sometimes are unreadable.

Optimum Size of QR Code

QR Code size depends on the information to be encoded in the QR Code and scannable distance. Optimum size of a QR Code is 1:10, meaning thereby that a 1 centimeter QR Code can be scanned from the distance of 10 centimeters.
